Rwanda Standards Board (RSB)

The Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) is the national standards body, established in 2002 to provide standards-based solutions for trade promotion and consumer protection. Originally created as the Rwanda Bureau of Standards, it was restructured and renamed in 2013 under legislation No. 50/2013. Today, RSB develops and publishes national standards, delivers metrology services, manages quality testing laboratories, and offers product and systems certification across multiple sectors. It has already published more than 4,100 standards covering food, agriculture, engineering, environment, chemistry, and consumer products.

RSB’s responsibilities include developing and publishing standards, offering certification and quality assurance services, operating national laboratories, and providing scientific, industrial, and legal metrology. It also supports the Made in Rwanda Policy, manages the national logo for domestic products, advises government on standardization policy, and raises awareness of the importance of standards for trade and development. The institution’s structure comprises four divisions: the National Standards Division, National Quality Testing Laboratories, National Metrology Services, and National Certification Division.

RSB has gained international recognition for its competence in certification, testing, and metrology. It is certified under ISO 9001 for its quality management system and is an active member of key organizations such as ISO, the IEC, OIML, Codex Alimentarius, the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO), and the African Electrotechnical Standardization Commission (AFSEC).
